Our School Tour

We went on our School Tour last Friday. We decided to stay
in Tralee, and had a fun-filled day around the town. Our first
stop in the morning was the Aquadome, where we played 18
holes of Crazy Golf. After that, we went to Tralee Omniplex
to see Prince of Persia.

We were very lucky to have such a fine day, and we walked
to McDonalds after the film for our lunch. Everybody had
loads to eat, and we even ordered desserts! To finish off the
day, we went to Bowling Buddies for some bowling fun. It
was brilliant, as we had our own private jukebox over there,
thanks to Gavin! We had a super day, and everybody really
enjoyed themselves.

We are on Twitter

We started a Twitter Experiment last week with 21 other Primary schools from around the country. It was our first time tweeting and we really enjoyed it. We had lots of fun learning about other counties and towns, and asking other schools questions. We hope to continue tweeting with other schools, and would like to thank Simon Lewis of Carlow Educate Together National School for starting the experiment and allowing us to be part of it. If you would like to follow us on twittter, please click on the Follow me button in the sidebar.

Fit Factor Success!

We went to Dublin yesterday for the Fit Factor awards ceremony. We were looking forward to receiving our prize for winning the Munster title, but were not expecting to also be named in third place in the National Competition. We collected a cheque for €3,000 to spend on Sports Equipment. Ms O Keeffe is seen here receiving the cheque from Aoife Clerkin of Lidl Ireland. Fit Factor Excitement!

We got the news yesterday that the Awards ceremony for the Fit Factor competition will take place on Tuesday 18th next. We will be travelling up to Dublin by train at 5.20 am. We were all so excited when the venue was announced - The Aviva stadium (seen on left)! It only opened its doors today, so it will be a first for everyone travelling up. There are ten children attending from each class which participated - our class, Ms O Keeffe's, and Ms Flanagan's. The winners will be announced on the day, and we are looking forward to receiving our prize for being crowned Munster winners.
We are hoping that the Fit Factor judges will be in attendance as we are all looking forward to meeting them. We hope to get plenty of photos, which we will post on the blog shortly after the event. Good luck to everyone travelling up, and well done to everyone involved.

We have a new Class President

Jack is our new Class President! After an extensive election campaign, Jack was elected on Monday. He will be the President for the week, after which we will have another election. His duties as president include;
1. To sit on the Presidential Throne
2. To elect a Vice President and Bodyguard
3. To assist teacher with any duties/messages
4. To choose which activity will be done at P.E.
5. To ensure that the classroom is kept tidy
6. To wear the Presidential badge at all times
7. To make sure that everyone treats their classmates with respect and kindness
Jack has nominated Evan O C as his Vice-President and Evan M as his "bodyguard". He is doing a great job so far. They are pictured here with the "presidential puffles". Well done to all of the other candidates.

Clay Sandcastles

Yesterday, we made sandcastles from clay. Each group of four people worked on the design and construction of their own sandcastle. We used lots of different tools to sculpt the castles, and when we had finished, we sprinkled them with sand.

50 Years of CBS, Clounalour

We had a great day of celebrations yesterday to mark the 50th year of CBS Primary School at Clounalour, Tralee. We celebrated with a mass at St John's Church. The whole school attended the mass, which was celebrated by Bishop Bill Murphy. Our school choir, directed by Ms Kerins provided beautiful hymns and music throughout. All of the pupils who attended the school, when it first opened its doors in 1959 were invited to attend.

After the mass, we held a reception at the school. The school corridors were full of old photographs for people to enjoy. Two DVD's were produced for the occasion, and these were both shown to the guests on the Interactive Whiteboards. The first DVD was produced by John Drummey, and featured many old photographs, and various interviews wih past pupils. These included Dick Spring, Paschal Sheehy, Brother O Connell and Michael Mercer. The second piece represented life in CBS today, and featured a lot of the activities that take place in our school. The changes which have taken place have been extraordinary.

The school hall was a haven of activity afterwards, when everybody gathered for refreshments. Old friends shared stories and memories, and a memorable day was had by all.

CBS has got the Fit Factor!

We were all so excited last Thursday when we got the phonecall that our school had been chosen as the regional winners of the Fit Factor competition. Over the past five weeks, three classes in our school have been taking part in the programme. The Lidl Fit Factor programme is designed to educate children on the importance of healthy eating and physical activity in a fun and exciting way. As part of the programme, we did exercises in our classroom, made smoothies, had a healthy eating cook-off, took the fat-mile challenge, and went jogging in the town park, to mention but a few activities. We also learned all about the Food Pyramid, healthy eating and the importance of exercise in our lives. At the end of the four weeks, we put together a project representing our experience of the programme. Our project included photographs, artwork, reports, posters, video footage and poetry.

We were even more delighted to be chosen as Munster winners when we realised that Johnathan Sexton and George Hook were among the panel of judges! We have won €1,000 worth of Sports Equipment for our school and are in the final to compete for the grand prize of €6,000 worth of Sports Equipment. Online voting will form part of this process, so we will be looking for your help with his. We wil post the details when we get them.
Congratulations to the three classes involved in this fantastic achievement; Room 8 (Ms O Keeffe's 3rd Class), Room 18 (Ms Flanagan's 4th Class), and Room 17 (Ms Culloty's 4th Class)

Ellie the Elephant visits our school!

Last week, we had a visit from Ellie the Elephant, the official mascot of the Credit Union savings scheme for Primary school children. We have been busy saving with the Credit Union every Tuesday since November. As you can see, everyone was very pleased to see Ellie!

Get Active to go Interactive

Last week, we launched our annual fundraiser - our sponsored walk. This year, we are "getting active to go interactive!". We are hoping that the money we raise from our walk will go towards putting an Interactive Whiteboard in every room. We are all very excited about this and hope to raise a lot of money. We have a fundraising gauge in our classroom to keep track of everybody's efforts.

We are lucky enough to have an Interactive Whiteboard already in our class, but we are trying really hard to ensure we raise enough for every other class in the school
